What is EAM?
The Escola's de Aprendizes-Marinhieros are Military Education establishments of the Brazilian Navy (MB) with the purpose of training Sailors for the Marine Corps . There are currently four Navy schools spread across Brazil:
- School of Apprentices-Sailors of Ciara (EAMCE), in Fortaleza;
- School of Apprentice-Sailors of Pernambuco (EAMPE), in Recife;
- School of Sailors Apprentices of Esparto Santo (EAMES), in Vila Vela; and
- School of Apprentice-Sailors of Santa Catarina (EAMSC), in Florianopolis.
How to join EAM?
To join the EAM, those interested must take the Admission Contest to the Schools of Apprentice-Sailors. The EAM Contest is only open once a year and offers places for both male and female candidates.
Female vacancies were opened in 2022, before, the contest was restricted to male candidates.
Basic requirements
- To participate in the EAM selection process, candidates must meet the following criteria :
- be Brazilian by birth or naturalized;
- being single and not having children;
- be 18 years of age or under 22 years of age by June 30 of the year of enrollment; and

Enrollment in the selective can only be made from 8:00 am on March 28 and until 11:59 pm on April 10, 2022 , via the internet. Pay attention to the data entered! The candidate will have to prove all the information in the Document Verification stage to proceed with the selection.
During the application process , the candidate must indicate, in order of preference, the professional area he/she wishes to pursue – that is, Electronics, Support or Mechanics. In addition, the candidate must also indicate which of the four Schools for Apprentice-Sailors he wants to go to.
Heads up! Female candidates can only apply to the Escola de Aprendizes-Marinhieros de Santa Catarina (EAMSC ), in Florianopolis.
Registration fee and exemption
The registration fee is R$ 40.00 and must be paid by April 14th. However, candidates who meet the prerequisites can apply for a waiver of payment . Are they:
- Bone marrow donor in entities recognized by the Ministry of Health;
- Family member enrolled in CAD Unico; and
- Family member with monthly per capita income less than or equal to half the national minimum wage.
To request the exemption, the candidate needs to print and sign the exemption request template, which will be on the selective page. Delivery can be made by email or in person at one of the ORELs, described in Annex I of EAM 22023 Notice.
Delivery can be made until April 4th . However, if the applicant wants to send the application by Registered Letter to the Navy Personnel Selection Service , the deadline will be April 1, 2022 . The address is Rue Visconti de ItaboraÃ, nº 69 – Centro – Rio de Janeiro/RJ -CEP 20010-060.
EAM Contest 2023- Stages
Within the EAM Contest, there are several steps for the candidate to enter, namely:
- Objective Written Test ;
- Verification of Biographical Data ;
- Health Inspection ;
- Physical Fitness Test ;
- Psychological Assessment ;
- Document Verification ;
- Heteroidentification Procedure ; and
- Adaptation Period .
The Objective Test has a qualifying and eliminatory character, while the others are just eliminatory. Check below in detail all the stages of the EAM Contest 2023!
Objective Written Test
The written tests of the School of Apprentice-Sailors are taken in a single day. The assessment has 50 questions in total and lasts for 4 hours . Each question of the written test is worth 2.0 points and requires candidates to have knowledge of the following subjects:
- Portuguese – 15 questions ;
- Mathematics – 15 questions ;
- Science (Physics and Chemistry) – 15 questions ; and
- English – 5 questions .
The test takes place in the morning, starting at 9:30 am. The candidate cannot take the test away after the application. Wearing masks will be mandatory at the test site!
Verification of Biographical Data
This stage has only an eliminatory character, with the objective of verifying if the candidate fulfills the requirements of a good conduct record for admission to the EAM.
Health Inspection
This stage is only eliminatory. The Health Inspection has the function of verifying that candidates have met the medical criteria and standards for aptitude for a military career in the MB.
The list of exams that need to be delivered at this stage are described in item II of Annex V of the EAM 2023 Notice.
Physical Fitness Test
This stage is only eliminatory. In the Physical Aptitude Test , the function is to test the resistance according to the physical standards required for the MB career. The tests contain swimming and running events and are carried out on two non-consecutive days .
The requirement level is different for female candidates.
The result of these evaluations will be after the completion of the activities by the candidate, at the test site. After completing this stage, all candidates must sign the sheet with the results of the activities carried out during the Navy exam.
Psychological Assessment
This stage is only eliminatory. This stage evaluates candidates according to a scientific procedure to verify the candidate's psychological characteristics for a future military career, namely:
Intellective – intended for verifying the general and/or specific aptitudes of candidates based on the requirements of future activities; and
Persona logical – intended to verify the personality characteristics of the candidate based on the requirements of future activities.
Intellectual
The First assessment is carried out to verify the basic requirements to carry out future activities, being:
- speed;
- Memory; and
- Intelligence.
Personality
In the second evaluation , the personality characteristics and motivation of the candidate to carry out future activities are verified, namely:
- Adaptability;
- Hierarchy acceptance;
- Cooperation;
- Subject;
- Emotional control;
- Ability to work in a team;
- Responsibility;
- Initiative; and
- Motivation.
Document Verification
This stage is only eliminatory. For this step, the Navy candidate must have some documents in hand to verify the data for the student's registration . The documents are:
- Birth certificate;
- Diploma or Certificate/Declaration of Completion of the High School Course accompanied by the respective Academic Transcript (for candidates under the age of 18);
- Certificate of Moral Suitability and Good Background, for members of the Armed Forces, Military Police and Military Fire Brigades; and
- Certificate of Electoral Discharge issued by the Superior Electoral Court.
Heteroidentification Procedure
This stage has an eliminatory character only, and is only for candidates who declare themselves black during the registration period. This procedure is based on verifying the candidate's choice to compete for the vacancies reserved for Navy quota holders.
Adaptation period
This stage is only eliminatory. Candidates are called for the presentation referring to the beginning of the Adaptation Period in the Schools of Apprentice-Sailors (EAM) , according to the date foreseen in the calendar of events.
The Adaptation Period is very important during the C-FMN, being based on the “Instruction Manual for the Adaptation Period of Initial Training Courses of the Naval Education System”, DEnsM-1002, of the Navy Education Directorate.
In the first two weeks of Student at School, students will have an adaptation to the new military routine. During this process, traditional procedures of the military will be shown and on naval behavior for acting in the Brazilian Navy.
In addition, the bases of the Institution Hierarchy and Discipline are presented through classes, lectures, exercises and training. Having a team of 30 military personnel to direct and teach students, being the main responsible for passing on technical and practical knowledge of the career.

How is the Training Course at EAM?
The Sailors Training Course for Active Life (C-FMN) is carried out in Schools for Apprentice Sailors, with no housing costs for students. The course lasts for 48 weeks, with completion in just one year.
During the course, students will have subjects of Basic Education and Military-Naval Education.
C-FMN
The Sailors Training Course for Active Life (C-FMN) is intended for the training of Sailors for the Army Private Corps (CPA) , lasting 48 weeks , according to the semi-boarding regime. Having a total of 40 hours per week .
The C-FMN is divided into two phases, namely:
- Apprentice Sailor (AM); and
- Grummet (GR).
First Phase – Apprentice Sailor
The first phase proposes to develop skills for naval military training, based on two types of education , namely basic and naval military .
In this phase the students will be in the Apprentice-Sailor process , aiming to stimulate the practices of new skills that are fundamental for military activities, being compatible with the military-naval.
Second phase – Grummet
The second phase of training takes place at the graduation of Grummet , with the objective of developing skills related to professional military education in one of the three possible areas of activity for the candidate to choose during the graduation of Naval Military, namely:
- Support;
- electronics; and
- mechanics.
Support
Within the support area, the student can choose between:
- Usher;
- Chef;
- PE;
- Nursing;
- writing;
- Maneuvers;
- Aviation Equipment;
- Maneuvers and Repairs;
- magazine;
- Traffic Security; and
- Waterway and Signs.
Electronics
According to this area of the Navy, the student can choose to:
- armament;
- Avionics;
- Internal Communications;
- Naval Communications;
- Air Control;
- Shooting Direction;
- Electricity, Electronics;
- Lighthouse keeper;
- Hydrography;
- Navigation;
- Radar Operator; and
- Sonar Operator.
Mechanics
In the area of Marine Mechanics the student can choose between:
- Mechanical Craftsman;
- Craftsman of Metallurgy;
- Carpentry;
- Structure;
- Aviation Metallurgy;
- machines;
- Diving;
- engines;
- Aviation Engines;
In addition to the chosen area, the candidate must continue with the activities initiated by the first phase of the C-FMN.
EAM: Benefits Offered
In addition to the course, students receive some benefits such as:
- Food;
- Uniform;
- Psychological, social and religious medical-dental assistance;
- Apprentice Sailor; and
- Grant aid.
Grant aid
During the Sailor Apprentice course, the student will receive a grant of R$1,303.90. In the second phase of training, at the graduation of Grummet, the student receives a grant of R$ 1,398.30.
Marine Pay
Upon completion of the course, EAM students become Sailors for the Marine Corps , receiving a salary of R$1,765, which with additional fees can reach R$2,294.50.
